What To Do When You Have No Treats, No Toys…And A Dog That Won’t Listen

How To Train Your Dog Without Treats Or Toys

You’re halfway through a walk with your dog.

Your dog spots something.

And then it hits you…

I don't have anything!

No treats.
No toys.

And that sinking feeling:

“Oh no… this walk is about to fall apart.”

Sound familiar?

This Is Where Most People Panic

Because they’ve been taught that rewards = food or toys.

So when those are accidentally forgotten, run out, get lost…

You feel like you've lost control.

But Here’s The Stuff Other Dog Training Isn't Telling You

Food and toys are not the only rewards.

Not even close.

Your dog cares about a lot of things out in the world.

And once you start using those?

Everything changes.

The Shift: Stop Carrying Rewards. Start Seeing Them.

Do I use treats and toys as part of my dog training? Absolutely!!!

But I also don't rely on them either.

Instead of asking:

👉 “What do I have on me?” "What treats are higher value?"

Start asking:

👉 “What does my dog actually want right now?”

Because that thing?

That’s your leverage.

That’s your reward.

Here's 1 Thing You Always Have That Can Be Used As A Reward

Movement (This Is A Big One)

A lot of dogs don’t just like movement…

They’re obsessed with it.

Running.
Chasing.
Spinning.
Jumping.
Engaging with something dynamic.

And yet most people completely ignore it as a reward.

In fact we often stop and freeze in these moments.

Here’s What Movement As A Reward Looks Like In Real Life

Instead of:

Standing still
Calling your dog's name over and over and over again whilst they ignore you
Hoping they choose you this time (even though they never have before)

Try this:

  • Move away quickly

  • Change direction

  • Create energy

  • Invite your dog into the movement

Now you become something worth running towards.

And instead of bracing for your dog to bark, lunge and lose their mind as you tightly hold on their leash and hope you don't get pulled over.

Instead, the moment your dog notices their distraction use movement by saying "let's go" and speeding up your pace together, or changing direction.

You Can Also Use Movement As The Payout

Your dog checks in with you?

👉 Release them to run

They respond to a cue?

👉 Burst into movement together

They engage with you?

👉 Turn it into a quick game

Movement doesn’t just get attention…

It reinforces it.

Why Does This Work?

Because you’re no longer competing against the environment.

You’re becoming part of it.

You’re rewarding your dog in a meaningful way. In a way that they actually want to engage with.

The Mistake That Keeps People Stuck

They rely on:

  • Treats in the pocket

  • Toys in the bag

  • Hoping like hell they don't encounter distractions today

So when real life happens…

Everything falls apart.

What You Actually Want

A dog that can:

  • listen and respond even when you’ve got nothing on you

  • stay engaged in real-world environments

  • choose you without needing to see what's in it for them first

You’re never “empty handed” on a walk.

You’re just not always using what’s already there.

Once you learn how to tap into what your dog actually values…

You stop panicking.

And start feeling in control again.

If this sounds like the missing piece for you and your dog...

This is exactly what I teach my 1:1 Dog Training clients at Your Canine Compass.

How to build real-world engagement…

So your dog listens - even when surprise distractions happen.
